North Georgia College
didn’t just educate Greg. It instilled a standard in him. And once that standard becomes part of you, you don’t hang it in a closet. You carry it—for a lifetime.
10 Things North Georgia College Taught Me
Looking back on my years at North Georgia College, I realize that I learned far more than what was taught in a classroom. At the time, I didn’t always understand why we were doing the things we were doing. Years later, I can see how those experiences shaped the person I became.
- Discipline matters.
NGC taught me that you don’t always understand why something matters when you’re doing it. Sometimes, you don’t understand until years later. - Details matter.
Polishing brass, shining boots, making my bed, preparing for inspection—those things seemed like small details at the time. Looking back, I understand that small things become big things when standards matter. - I was responsible for my own standards.
I learned that nobody should have to constantly remind me to do what I know is right. Eventually, the standard has to come from within. - Accountability is personal—and collective.
At NGC, one person’s actions could affect everyone. I learned that being part of a team meant being responsible not only for myself, but for the people beside me. - Leadership is earned through responsibility.
When I arrived at NGC, the upperclassmen intimidated me. Before long, I became one of the people responsible for those coming behind me. That transition taught me that leadership wasn’t about authority. It was about responsibility. - Humility is part of becoming a leader.
Frog Week had a way of stripping away ego. I learned that leadership wasn’t about feeling important. It was about becoming dependable. - Hardship creates camaraderie.
Marching in the cold, struggling through training, and sharing difficult experiences created friendships and bonds that lasted long after graduation. - You don’t always understand the lesson while you’re learning it.
There was a time when I seriously considered leaving NGC. At the time, I couldn’t see the purpose behind some of what we were being asked to do. Looking back, I realize those experiences were preparing me for things I hadn’t even imagined yet. - Confidence comes from doing hard things.
NGC taught me that confidence isn’t something someone can give you. It comes from facing something difficult, getting through it, and knowing you can do it again. - The uniform comes off, but the standard stays with you.
Perhaps the greatest lesson I took from North Georgia College is that the uniform eventually comes off, but the standards don’t. I carried those standards with me into the Army and throughout my life.
Looking back now, I realize that North Georgia College didn’t just educate me. It helped shape me. It gave me standards, discipline, friendships, and lessons that I would carry for the rest of my life.
At the time, I thought I was simply going to college.
I didn’t realize I was becoming the man I would need to be for everything that came afterward.
